Specially for the 250th anniversary of Roullet Cognac house, a joint art-project with the legendary French artist Zafi was created.

Specially for the 250th anniversary of Roullet Cognac house, a joint art-project with the legendary French artist Zafi was created.

His work «Les femmes de Cognac» adorns the limited edition Roullet XO Art de Zafi cognac. It depicts four women in cubist style, three of which symbolize the cru of the Cognac region, where Roullet drinks are born: Fain Bois, Grande Champagne and Petit Champagne, and the fourth - France itself. Only 856 bottles are produced and already available at LADOGA Wine and Monopol.

Roullet XO Art de Zafi cognac is made from Uni Blanc grapes from Roullet's own vineyards. Raised in Limousin oak barrels from 14 to 34 years of age. The youngest spirit in the blend is from 2008, the oldest from 1988. The colour is deep amber with copper highlights. In the complex aroma there are notes of vanilla, dried fruit, rose petals, almond, orange peel and, of course, rancier, typical of long-aged cognacs. The taste is intense and silky. The aftertaste is velvety, rich and elegant. Recommended as a pure digestif or to accompany dark chocolate desserts and noble cheeses.

Among the Moscow bartenders won Andrey Kobyakov from the gastronomic atelier Sartoria Lamberti, in St. Petersburg won Anton Shirobokov from the bar One And Half Room, in Yekaterinburg won Ivan Chusov from the Kitchen restaurant, and in Kazan the winner was Yana Aidarova from the Mr. Willard bar.

All finalists received gifts from the Roullet cognac house, and the winner, Artyom Talalay, got a special prize - 20-year-old Roullet cognac in a unique egg-shaped box styled as the works of Karl Faberge. The gift box is made of an alloy of metal, covered with enamel in different colors and decorated with colored crystals. The composition is completed by a graceful and elegant eagle, designed by one of the most famous Florentine masters, who has been working in Vatican for more than thirty years. Bottle and glasses are made of Venetian glass. Artyom was also given a trip to France with a visit to the Roullet cognac house, where he will have the opportunity to gain new ideas and inspiration for creating his cocktails.

The aim of the competition was to return cognac to the frontline of cocktail and gastronomic culture in Russia and to eliminate the stereotype that cognac is nothing more than a digestive. For several months, the participants of the challenge proved that cognac was unfairly forgotten on the far shelf of the bar and, due to its rich organoleptic properties, deserves much more attention.

According to the terms of the competition, each participant had to prepare a cocktail based on Roullet VS cognac and choose the perfect gastronomic pair for it. And also to challenge two other bartenders, involving them in the competition.

Dozens of applications were submitted for the competition. The Roullet Bartender Challenge brought together bartenders from Moscow, St. Petersburg, Yekaterinburg, Sochi and Kazan. Many of the contestants' cocktails, created on the basis of Roullet VS cognac, have become the embodiment of bartender's art, reflecting the history and philosophy of the drink.

The authoritative jury of the competition included representatives of the Roullet cognac house, the WHERETOEAT award organizing committee, journalists from specialized media, bloggers. The experts faced a difficult task - to choose the best among the representatives of five cities. The jury evaluated the aroma and taste of each cocktail, serving, conceptuality, combination of the drink and the gastronomic pair.

Cadet - a new range of Roullet cognac house

There is no need for a special reason to consume Roullet cognacs, any day could be special. This idea is reflected in the new Roullet Cadet release, which combines the centuries-old traditions of the region of production with the modern trends in the world of cognac.

The first product in the Roullet Cadet line was the XO category cognac, created from 2008, 1989 and 1988 spirits. The spirits for this cognac, in contrast to the rest of Roullet cognacs of category XO, were distilled without fine sediment. This production method makes this cognac light and especially fresh. The origin of various crus give the Roullet Cadet blend versatility and balance.

The aromatics of Roullet Cadet are rich in notes of prunes, figs, almonds, complemented by nuances of spices, revealing hints of honey and sandalwood. The taste of Roullet Cadet XO is balanced and fruity at the beginning with a smooth transition to a velvety finish.

The cherry on top is a gift box embellished with Roullet's signature salamander monogram and an exquisite red interior.

The novelty has already been tasted by Paolo Basso, a winemaker and the best sommelier in the world in 2013. As he noted during the tasting, Roullet Cadet cognac has a rich classic aroma with the scent of spices, cinnamon, clove and honey. The taste is intense and silky, changes during the tasting, acquiring more and more volume and character and, at the same time, maintaining its bright and sophisticated style. Rich and elegant finish. Strength and elegance are combined in this cognac, which stands out for its deep character. Cognac is perfect for completing a meal in combination with dark chocolate and desserts.

On November 17, the final one of the four tastings took place, where Russian aficionados determined a special cask of Roullet cognac, which will be bottled as a cigar Roullet - the choice of Russian aficionado.

The first tasting took place in Yekaterinburg, with the participation of Ural aficionados, the second in Moscow, the third in Nizhny Novgorod, and finally, the fourth, in St. Petersburg.

The choice was being made among four barrels of cognac: Fins Bois 2004, Fins Bois 2003, Grande Champagne 2000, Grande Champagne 1997. They were poured into samples exactly in this order.

The participants tried the cognacs blindly (without knowing the exact origin of the spirits), neat and together with a cigar, and identified two cognacs that worked best with a cigar. It was necessary to assign the first and second places incompatibility. There were 25 experts. The leader was not determined until the very end. And only now when the statistics have been calculated we are ready to announce which Roullet will become the choice of Russian aficionados.

As a result, the oldest variant from Grand Champagne won: Roullet Grande Champagne 1997. The cognac will be bottled with natural strength and natural color in the amount of about 300 bottles and brought to Russia in the first half of 2021.

Representatives of the following clubs participated in the selection:

• club "South Ural" Chelyabinsk

• Club "Moscow Aficionados"

• Club "OUR Cigar Club"

• Club "Moscow Cigar Club"

• Club "Gorky" N. Novgorod

• Club "Chkalov" N. Novgorod

• Club "Horse Power" St. Petersburg

and independent experts.

We would like to thank the lounges La Casa del Habano Yekaterinburg, Cigar & Porto Lounge Nizhny Novgorod, Davidoff St. Petersburg for being the ideal places for the tastings.

The history of Roullet Сognac House dates back to the XVIII century to a place called Le Goulet in the village of Foussignac located to the north of Jarnac in the Cognac region. This is the place where from 1772 the Roullet family owned vineyards and started to distillate own growth wine to «eaux-de-vie». In 1780 Paul Frédéric Roullet founded the Cognac House. Nowadays Roullet Cognac House is part of SAS LES VIGNOBLES REUNIS-ROULLET Company. Despite being a modern company that takes into account the market trends and consumer preferences, the House still remains committed to the family age-old traditions.

Mathias Paul Roullet, the ninth generation, keeps a watchful eye on the «eaux-de-vie» and perpetuates his family traditions. The company has more than 200 hectares of its own vineyards, the majority of which (about 140 hectares) are located in Fins Bois, the historical homeland of Roullet – Foussignac and Migron. About 30 hectares are situated in the heart of the Grande Champagne vineyards in Saint-Preuil and Segonzac. There are also vineyards located in Maleville, Grande Champagne (18 hectares) and in Sainte-Lheurine, Petite Champagne (16 hectares).
